Sound and Fury
Great television was made when, over the course of some 20 years, two heavyweights met again and again in the studios of ABC Sports--boxing champ Muhammad Ali and sportscaster Howard Cosell. Their many genial confrontations were watched by viewers not only for their perspicuity, but for the wonderful meeting of two language worlds as the street-smart Ali and the ex-lawyer Cosell engaged in a dialogue. Also, it was rare to see Ali out of the ring and still for any length of time. Cosell was a sportscaster who, early on, knew that sports and society were related, and he defended Ali when he was stripped of his championship because of his views during the Vietnam War. On many a late Saturday afternoons, going over matches, analyzing opponents, or just probing, they reached a level of mutual respect and accommodation while also garnering high ratings for ABC. Sportswriter Dave Kindred puts it all into perspective as he recalls the odd couple of TV sports, and the theater or circus that was.
